What Socks to Wear With Air Force 1s (Low, Mid & High)
Share
The Air Force 1 is the most worn trainer on the planet, and most people still get the socks wrong. Trainer socks that vanish and leave a bare ankle. Grey gym socks that sag. A logo sock that says nothing. The AF1 is a big, chunky, loud shoe. It deserves socks that can keep up.
Want the short version? Graphic crew socks, pulled up, shown off. Start with our white-based designs for white AF1s, or browse every Venture pair.
The quick answer
For most people, most of the time: crew socks, pulled up above the shoe. White crew socks are the classic, and a graphic crew sock is how you make the fit yours. No-shows are fine on a hot day with shorts if you want a clean line, but the AF1 is too chunky to look right with a trainer sock peeking out of the collar. Quarter socks sit in the middle and rarely look like a decision.
| Sock height | Works with AF1s? | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Crew (mid-calf) | Yes. The default. | Shorts, cropped trousers, cuffed jeans, basically everything |
| Quarter (just above the ankle) | Sometimes | Joggers with a tapered cuff where the sock barely shows |
| No-show | Occasionally | Hot days, tailored shorts, when you want zero sock at all |
| Trainer or ankle sock | Rarely | Honestly, almost never. It looks like you forgot. |
Why the Air Force 1 is different
Most sock rules are written for slim trainers. The AF1 isn't slim. Bruce Kilgore designed it in 1982 as a basketball shoe, the first basketball shoe to use Nike Air, and he borrowed the lowered heel collar from a Nike hiking boot called the Approach. The result is a tall, padded, heavy-soled shoe with a lot of visual weight at the bottom of your leg.
That weight is the reason the sock matters so much. A tiny sock under a big shoe makes your ankle look thin and the shoe look like a clown's. A proper crew sock bridges the gap between the shoe and the leg, and suddenly the whole outfit looks planned.
The shoe has also spent four decades outside basketball. It was nicknamed "Uptowns" because of how common it was in Harlem, it's been produced in well over a thousand colourways, and it's been Nike's best-selling shoe for years. It belongs to hip-hop, skate, streetwear and school runs all at once. So there isn't one right sock, but there are plenty of wrong ones.
Low, mid or high: does it change the sock?
Air Force 1 Low
The one most people own. The collar sits just below the ankle bone, so every inch of sock between the shoe and your hem is on show. This is where crew socks earn their keep. With shorts, pull them up and let them do the talking. With jeans or trousers, cuff the hem once or twice so a band of sock shows above the shoe.
Air Force 1 Mid
The mid covers the ankle and has the strap. Less sock is on show, so a busy all-over graphic can get lost. Go for a crew with a strong design at the top of the cuff, or a bold stripe that sits right above the strap.
Air Force 1 High
The high-top swallows most of the sock, so it's mainly about the top few inches. Pull the sock up over the collar with shorts for the full '80s look, or tuck your joggers into it. Either way, only a crew or taller sock works. Anything shorter just disappears.
White AF1s: what socks go with triple white?
White on white is the most common Air Force 1 colourway by a distance, and it's the easiest shoe to style socks with because it goes with anything. That's also the trap. It's so clean that a boring sock makes the whole fit feel unfinished.
Option 1: clean white crew
The classic. A white crew sock with white AF1s and shorts is the uniform for a reason. It reads as deliberate, it's easy, and it lengthens the leg. Our Signature Crew 3-Pack is exactly this: pristine white socks with a cushioned terry sole. If you want a tiny bit of detail, Off White gives you a softer tone with an embroidered icon.
Option 2: white with a stripe
An old-school stripe at the top of the cuff is the most '80s thing you can put with an Air Force 1, because that's what people wore with them in the first place. Varsity White brings crisp college-sport stripes. Stone Grey / White is quieter. Mets Navy / Orange and Lemon / Teal are for when you want the stripe to pop. Match the stripe to something else you're wearing, like a cap or a jacket, and the outfit ties together.
Option 3: white-based graphic crew
This is where it gets fun. A white base keeps the sock in the same family as the shoe, and the artwork does the talking. Our White Ones collection is built for this:
- Viva Jerry: American traditional tattoo flash with sugar skulls, daggers, coiled snakes and roses.
- Irezumi: Japanese tattoo art with oni masks, serpents and bold florals.
- Eye Test: blown-out eyeballs and smashed TVs, for when you want the socks to be the loudest thing in the room.
- Tattoo Studio and Love Hate: old-school ink, clean on a white base.
- Rock Paper Scissors and Storm Chaser: graphic without going full tattoo parlour.
Black AF1s: what socks go with triple black?
Triple-black Air Force 1s have a reputation, and we're not getting into that. Style-wise, they're heavier and moodier than white ones, so the sock decides whether the fit looks sharp or just dark.
- Black crew: the stealth option. Black shoe, black sock, black trousers makes one long line. Our Icon Multi Pack in black keeps it clean with a small Venture icon.
- Dark full-bleed graphics: black AF1s are the perfect frame for artwork that's printed cuff to toe. The Widow is vivid skull art in rich oranges and deep teals. Sacred is a flaming sacred heart, praying skeletal hands and a dagger in the roses.
- Contrast: a white sock with black AF1s is a bold, retro look that works best with shorts. If you do it, commit to it. Pull the socks up.
Coloured and custom AF1s
With over a thousand colourways out there, you might be wearing something far louder than white or black. The rule for coloured Air Force 1s is simple: let one thing be loud. If the shoe is doing a lot, go for a white crew or a simple stripe that picks up one of the shoe's colours. If the shoe is mostly white with a coloured Swoosh, a graphic sock that shares that colour looks like you planned the whole thing, even if you didn't.
Crew socks with AF1s: how to actually wear them
With shorts
Pull them all the way up. A crew sock scrunched down to the ankle looks like it gave up. Full height, and the sock becomes part of the outfit instead of a leftover.
With jeans
Straight or relaxed jeans with one or two cuffs, sitting just above the shoe. You want a strip of sock visible between denim and leather. Skinny jeans over AF1s are a whole other conversation.
With joggers and trackies
Two ways. Cuffed joggers sitting just above the sock for a clean, sporty look, or joggers tucked into crew socks for the full '80s basketball look. Tucking only works with a sock that has some personality. A plain white gym sock tucked into trackies looks like a PE lesson.
With cargos and wide trousers
Wide or cargo trousers that stack on top of the shoe hide the sock completely. If that's your fit, the sock is for comfort only. Save the loud pairs for when you're in shorts.
Comfort: what your socks need inside an Air Force 1
AF1s are heavy, padded and hot. You'll feel the sock you pick after a full day in them.
- Cushioned sole. A terry sole adds a layer between your foot and a shoe that's comfortable but not exactly soft.
- Reinforced heel and toe. The AF1's padded heel collar grips the sock, and that's where cheap socks wear through first.
- A cuff that stays up. A ribbed body that holds its shape means the sock stays where you put it instead of sliding into the shoe by lunchtime.
- Never go sockless. The AF1's padded lining soaks up sweat and holds onto the smell. A no-show sock beats bare feet every time.
Every Venture pair has a soft terry sole, a reinforced heel and toe, and a ribbed body that holds its shape. They're a polyester and spandex blend, machine washable at 40°C. Sizes are simple: S/M fits UK 3–7 and M/L fits UK 8–12.
Common mistakes
- The half-sock. A trainer sock with its edge just peeking out of an AF1 collar. It's the most common mistake and the easiest to fix.
- Grey marl gym socks. Fine for the gym. With clean white AF1s they look tired.
- Too many loud things. A loud shoe, loud sock, loud shorts and loud tee make a mess. Pick one or two.
- Socks that sag. A crew sock that's collapsed round your ankle by midday undoes the whole point. Cheap elastic is the culprit.

FAQ: socks with Air Force 1s
What socks should you wear with Air Force 1s?
Crew socks, pulled up, are the default and work with shorts, cuffed jeans and joggers. White crew socks are the classic. A graphic or striped crew adds personality. No-shows work on hot days if you want no visible sock at all.
Should you wear long or short socks with Air Force 1s?
Longer, in almost every case. The AF1 is a chunky shoe, and a crew sock balances it. Short trainer socks that peek out of the collar tend to look accidental.
Do white socks go with white Air Force 1s?
Yes. White crew socks with white AF1s is one of the most classic combinations in streetwear. Add a stripe at the cuff for an '80s look, or pick a white-based graphic sock if you want more character.
What socks go with black Air Force 1s?
Black crew socks for a clean, stealthy line, or dark full-bleed graphic socks that the black shoe frames nicely. White socks with black AF1s is a bold contrast that works best with shorts.
Can you wear no-show socks with Air Force 1s?
You can, especially with shorts in summer. Just don't go fully sockless, because the AF1's padded lining absorbs sweat and holds smells.
Do socks change with Air Force 1 Low, Mid and High?
Yes. Lows show the most sock, so it's worth picking something good. Mids hide the ankle, so a design near the top of the cuff works best. Highs hide most of the sock, so pull it up over the collar or tuck your joggers in.
How do you wear crew socks with Air Force 1s and jeans?
Cuff straight or relaxed jeans once or twice so a strip of sock shows between the hem and the shoe. Very wide jeans that stack over the shoe will hide the sock completely.
Who designed the Air Force 1?
Bruce Kilgore designed the Air Force 1, and it was released in 1982 as the first basketball shoe with Nike Air cushioning. It borrowed its lowered heel collar from a Nike hiking boot called the Approach.
What size socks should I get for Air Force 1s?
Go by your normal shoe size. Venture S/M fits UK 3–7 and M/L fits UK 8–12. If you're between sizes, size up for a roomier crew that sits higher on the leg.
Sort the socks, then lace up
